There are few subtle changes you should make to the skin care products you take away on holiday. This post explains what products/ingredients to include and a few you should leave out.
When we go on holiday the skin gets a lot more exposure to the sun in a short period of time than it normally does, especially if you’re a beach babe so even though you may religiously re-apply your sun protection there are certain products I still ditch favour of more soothing, replenishing options combined with pre-protecting anti-oxidant serums.
Things to ditch: acid peels or toners (glycolic, citric, malic, tartaric and salicylic acid) or harsh manual exfoliants yes you could be a sunscreen nazi but stripping the skin prior to sun exposure is probably one of the worst things you could do, plenty of time for that at home. Essential oils such as lemon, ginger, lime, grapefruit & bergamot can also cause the skin to be photosensitive for up to 12 hours after application so check the ingredients of your products. Finally face wipes should be avoided as they unnecessarily pull and tug the skin.
Instead, look for ingredients such as clove, aloe vera, licorice, lavender, cucumber, chamomile and yucca to reduce irritation pain and redness peppermint to cool. Couple this with ingredients such as algae and hyaluronic acid to rehydrate the skin. Here are my current holiday skin care picks.
Ceramic Slip Clay Cleanser by Sunday Riley, the reason I chose this cleanser apart from the lovely detoxing properties of the morrocan /green clay blend is when your skin feels oily, sweaty and heavy after a day at the beach the clay’s will really suck out and remove any impurities along with any build up of sunscreen without making the skin feel tight – perfect for after sun exposure. It also contains sandalwood, frankincense and jasmine which help balance the skin’s oil production (great if you suffer from oily skin in warm weather). Removing your cleanser with a warm a flannel/washcloth is ok as it will only work as a very gentle exfoliator.
The first product I tried from Skin Pep was the Brightening Enzyme Peel which came in a Glossy Box and it gave lovely results. So I thought I would try their Revitalising Toner as it contained all the calming and soothing ingredients I was looking for in a holiday toner, it made my skin feel gorgeously fresh and tingly without feeling stripped. I also used it to second cleanse around the chin, jawline and corners of the nose to pick up any last traces of makeup/sunscreen. Finally, it’s paraben, SLS, mineral oil, alcohol, and artificial dye free (always a bonus in my book).
This is where it gets interesting I think, because as well as protecting the skin at the time with sunscreen there is also the pre-exposure option of using antioxidant containing preparations. If you’re still in your early twenties (skip this) but as time progresses these things usually become more of a concern, they now have a permanent place in my facial routine. How they work by scavenging the free radicals (which cause premature ageing) that are produced by the body due to diet, environmental pollution and the UVA/UVB rays from the sun. The one I’m using now is the Detox Serum Antioxidant +3 by Grown Alchemist.
Look for something that contains rich restorative base ingredients. My current choice is the Avocado Night Treatment by Naturals Beauty (ships internationally) containing avocado oil rich in sterolin’s which help heal sun damage it’s also full of those anti-oxidants I keep going on about. Another avocado based night cream I love is Antipodes Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream. You could also use either of these for days you just want to give your skin a bit of a break.
Decleor Hydra Floral Multi Protection Expert Mask*, I love Decleor in general I’ve worked with them professionally and have always had at least one of their products in my cupboard for as long as I can remember. Why? They know their stuff Decleor were doing balms long before balms were in fashion. So why did I choose this mask today? It’s more intelligent than just a standard moisture infusing mask as it contains two botanical extracts that help optimise hydration results. Extract of pansy which encourages the skin’s natural synthesis of hyaluronic acid restoring the dermal moisture cushion and samphire which helps provide a barrier against future moisture loss. This mask starts as a light cream which after massage turns into an oil. It has the most delightful uplifting fragrance and left my skin feeling relaxed, smooth and supple the perfect mask after a tough day at the beach…. ( or obviously any other time you feel your skin needs a boost).
So that’s my holiday skin care routine, I’d love to hear what you think?
