Lifestyle: Summer Shape Up

Fitness & Laziness, Healthy or Cupcakes. Although I like to think I have a fairly healthy lifestyle at times it slips, as to be honest being healthy is hard! So feeling like I need to shape up a little in time for summer I’m engaging in a bit of a spring clean of my diet and fitness regime. Which if I’m completely honest should be called project bikini body. So today I wanted to share with you all a few of the online resources and tips that I find really helpful to get beach ready.

 

Eat

While I’m in no way a nutritionist, here are a few tips that I find really help me to ditch less healthy options. Raw till 4: eating a diet high in raw food is becoming more mainstream by the minute, zoodles (raw zucchini noodles) are appearing everywhere. Raw till 4 is simply adopting these principles until 4pm (or there about’s) plus it works perfectly in the summer when it is so much easier to eat salads and foods that are not cooked. Eating a diet high in raw foods means you benefit from all the vitamins, phytonutrients and enzymes that are destroyed when food is cooked or processed above 130 degrees so provides great benefits for health and crazy vitality. It also completely cuts out most unhealthy choices such as cakes, processed/fried foods plus refined carbohydrates such as white rice, bread and pasta which I find totally hinder my results in achieving a flat stomach…. I find this eat clean get lean approach helps in lowering my body fat ratio and makes getting results from working out so much easier.

 

Boost

When I’m looking to boost my workout schedule I need every bit of energy possible so here’s a few things I use to power up my morning juice or smoothie.

Maca: Maca root originates from Peru and it’s packed full of vitamins, B12, and magnesium. It has a slight nutty flavour so can be added without ruining the taste of your juice/smoothie. If you haven’t heard of Maca it’s not some obscure supplement its actually so mainstream now it’s sold in Holland & Barratt. Oh and did I forget to mention, awesome at boosting energy.

Bee Pollen: One of my favourites as I find it provides a subtle lift in energy (as it’s full of B vitamins) other health benefits incl: antioxidants that have a soothing anti-inflammatory effect on the skin and respiratory system plus antibiotic type properties that boost the immune system, it’s a good one to give a go! Sprinkle a teaspoon on fruit, salads or into juice or smoothies.

Avocado: blended into juice or added to smoothies avocados are a great way to make juice or smoothie’s feel a bit more substantial and keep you feeling fuller for longer. Whenever I get back to into eating an avocado a day I tend to have less unhealthy cravings.

Raw Cacao: The things I use this for are endless, raw chocolate mousse, raw chips go into my smoothies and to kill sweet cravings raw hot chocolate (I use palm sugar or stevia to sweeten) I find it works 8 out of 10 times which isn’t bad. It also naturally lifts energy and mood.

 

Kick Start

We all know about body brushing, but it’s often forgotten. Whenever I need a bit of a kick start at the begging of a new health/detox or fitness program I body brush in the morning religiously, body brushing works by stimulating the lymphatic system. It basically gets everything moving helping to rid the body of toxins and although it doesn’t remove cellulite it dramatically improves the appearance of orange peel skin. It’s way more effective than any high priced firming cream out there and at a fraction of the cost. B-kini legs at the ready.

 

Inspiration

Madeline Shaw – I’ve followed Madeline for ages since she first started on Facebook and have loved every one of her recipes I’ve tried. No fuss, non-faddy just delicious nutritious healthy meal’s is what you’ll get.

Deliciously Ella – Who doesn’t love Ella, apart from positively glowing in every photo her incredible plant based recipes totally reinvigorate my love for healthy eating every time. Two recipe faves: energy bites (energy boosting snacks) and Zucchini and Carrot Noodles with Avocado, Pea & Kale Pesto.

Sarah Wilson – I purchased Sarah’s book not quite realizing the whole deal. Yep, it’s a program to quit sugar for good (as in forever…) Why? the list of health benefits for ditching sugar are endless not to mention how it ravages the skins collagen accelerating aging but honestly I’m never going to give up the sweet stuff permanently… (and don’t know if I would want too) but for the days I do want to go without it’s full of so many ingenious recipes for desserts, condiment’s and meals that I had to include it.

 

Workout

It’s difficult to find the time & motivation to get to the gym sometimes, trying to fit a workout in around work, family and a having a social life can be tough so when I can’t get to the gym here’s a few sites I love:

Blogilates: Offers free online videos for all levels combining workouts and pilates, Cassey has some great beginner and 3-month fitness programs. I love her motto abs are made in the gym revealed in the kitchen harsh but true…..

Pop Sugar Fitness: A a real mixture of free workout video’s, plus loads of healthy eating recipes.

Tone it up: Every style of work out you could think of from the gorgeous Karena & Katrina they’ve even got a 2015 bikini body series (here) most of which are filmed on the beach perfect for getting in the holiday mood.

Travis Elliot yoga: I just love this teacher – his accent and classes = instant motivation to get on my mat. I can’t recommend yoga in enough its fair to say it was life changing for me if you’ve never given it ago do, it’s so much more than stretches and balance. yoga delivers results but with the added benefit of calming and soothing the mind. If you have a stressful job or struggle with anxiety do yoga! His classes are downloadable via a donation system.

Yoga with Adriene: A new yoga video is uploaded every Wednesday. There’s also an amazing free 30-day challenge going on at the moment, that I’ve just started not to mention loads of easy to follow beginners videos.
